Okay, for all my pretentious touting of indie film and overly artistic media, I have one guilty pleasure that my friends have come to accept. I love 90’s teen movies
I watched Loser on my DVR tonight. Naive kid from the midwest goes to college in New York? How could that not be cinematic gold?
Ok, so here is why I really like this movie. Paul (the main character) is clueless, but in a good way…sort of. He doesn’t really realize that people are making fun of him and he is a bit too old fashioned for his own good, but he basically is a good guy and really just wants to make friends.
I was totally Paul in high school.
Seriously.
It was also my dream to move to New York and go to college. I even requested the admissions packet from NYU. I remember watching Loser in 2000 and really identifying with it. (I graduated from high school in 2000).
Where was I going with all this? Hmmm, not quite sure. I think the movie just brought back a lot of memories. In the end I didn’t move to New York (big suprise there) and became a bit less naive (not completely un-naive, though) but I don’t regret it. I enjoyed my time at UA and the people I met there.
So, yeah… 90’s teen movies… Good stuff.

These are what I call ’90s teen movies:
Clueless
Reality Bites
Empire Records
Dazed and Confused
There are more, but I’m forgetting them.
Those are good…but you can’t forget the classics like Can’t Hardly Wait – that’s my favorite! But I enjoyed Loser too…not shocking, since I enjoy lots of movies!
