movie review: november

Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of movies recently.

I was actually at work when I saw a coworker had a copy of November. All I knew about the movie was that it played at Sundance last year or something. Work can be pretty boring, so I popped it into the DVD player.

My first realization was…hey, this isn’t film. Then my coworker explained that she had to watch the movie for a class because it was shot on miniDV in 15 days. Ah…. With that piece of explanation behind me, I settled in.

Courteney Cox plays a woman who is having trouble dealing with the death of her boyfriend who was a bystander in a convenience-store robbery. She starts to have flashbacks of that night, but she isn’t always sure what is real. If I explained more, I would spoil the movie…as if I could. The truth is, I’m not sure what actually happens. I discussed it with my coworker and we both have our theories about the plot and I think that is the director’s goal – he just wants people to talk about it. Courteney Cox is good in the tortured role of Sophie, but she is a long way from Central Perk.

The movie itself looks great. It is a product of indigent which finances all-digital productions like this one and 2003’s Pieces of April. The movie definitely has a video feel, but you get use to it as you become more preoccupied in figuring out what the crap is going on.

Unless you are a fan of indie movies, don’t attempt this one. The feel of the movie, the almost impossible to understand plot, and the dramatic Courteney Cox will deter all but the bravest. If you do attempt it, bring a friend along. You are going to need to have someone to talk to afterwards.
