movie review: the prestige

The_Prestige03I really didn’t think I was going to like The Prestige.  When my friend, Nichee suggested we go, I was thinking it was a lesser of two evils (the other was going to Atrox Factory in Birmingham).  I didn’t think it was going to be bad, either, but from the trailer I envisioned it to be a bit forced and maybe even tedious.

So, I was wrong.

I’m finally coming to the conclusion that Christopher Nolan is one of the more talented directors working now.  I haven’t seen Memento, but I’ve heard great things about it and I personally think Batman Begins is the best Batman movie ever (I’m not such a Keaton or Burton fan, and Schumacher, well….)

Nolan doesn’t make it easy to write a review for The Prestige. It’s plot is so non-linear and twisty that not much information can be revealed beforehand without giving hints to the film’s secrets.

And the film is full of secrets.

The movie opens up on the trial of Alfred Borden for the murder of rival magician Robert Angier.  Angier blames Borden for the death of his wife and the two spend years trying to outdo each other – sometimes violently.

Christian Bale is awesome.  Wolverine…I mean, Hugh Jackman is good as well.  (Sorry man, you’ll always be Wolverine.)  You know what?  I am going to stop the review now.  Just go watch the movie.  You won’t regret it.

Rated: PG-13 for a couple of violent/disturbing images (but they don’t go overboard).
